These are some of the treasures I have found lately.

  • August, 2010 A blood red crescent moon caused by smoke from a fire on the Olympic Peninsula was more remarkable than the meteorites visible above the sky glow here in the city.
  • May 30, 2010 The lupines are out in force in very unusual bicolors this year. White, deep purple and yellow with magenta are combos new to me.
  • March 30, 2010 I have figs on my young trees already! In spite of the severe cold spell we had in early winter, plump, velvety figs are popping out on both trees. Hooray!
  • March 6, 2010 The wood anemones are blooming and the flicker family is hanging around, tolerated by the crow family. Interesting how some bird territories can overlap in peace.
  • Feruary 7, 2010 The petite daffodils are blooming now as well as the red flowering quince. The highs have been in the 50's for 2 weeks. I don't know if we will have another hard freeze this year. I hope not as the earliest plum buds are just beginning to show color.
  • January 02, 2010 The December hard freezes may have frozen some plants, but a lot pests were eliminated as a payoff. The severe clear weather is gone now and we are back to warmer rain. Flocks of starlings work over a nearby lawn while hawks watch nearby for the unwary.
  • November 15, 2009 One fig ripened and is just a memory of melting sweetness.
  • October 12, 2009 One of the figs on a tree I am watching is almost ripe. Just a little more sun, please!
  • September 16, 2009 The rain finally came in torrents, but at least the ground got a good soaking. The Mirabelle produced 40 pounds of fruit and the Stanley plum produced 90 pounds. True Abundance. The green figs are still as hard as rocks. Perhaps planting this was an error for this locale?
  • August 10, 2009 I feel like I am living in a dust bowl. The drought is really hard on my garden this year. Where is the rain Seattle is so famous for?
  • July 12, 2009 Now it is the fragrant ruby raspberries that call me to stand at the bush, picking and eating the sun warmed berries. I usually freeze some for winter, but the bushes are crowded by the triple graft plum tree to the point where there is no excess beyond what Arne and I can eat off the bushes.
  • June 15, 2009 Luscious red ripe strawberries in the garden bring back memories of childhood when we could only taste fresh strawberries once a year. How times have changed! But fruit right off the vine still tastes the best.
  • May 26, 2009 Minarets of Lupine march disorderly across my yard. This year the colors are magenta and purple in very deep colors. Quite a surprise as the lupine self-sow and last year were in yellows, pinks and whites.
