Artist's Statement

The power of abstracted shapes in the Northwest Coast carvings caught my heart when I first saw them. Living in the land where this art evolved allowed me to become aware of the universality of the vocabulary of shape that arises in the natural world. I see the shapes of the shoulder of a mountain, an avalanche track of snow, a clam shell on the beach or the rocks reflected in quiet water as a special kind of beauty. This beauty is as harsh and stark as the land or can be as soft and warm as the animals, birds and people who inhabit it.

The common thread is the beauty of the curve. The curve can be so subtle it is almost straight. The curve can be almost angular or very softly sweeping. My eye glides along these curves in delight wherever I find them. The more I study them, the easier it is for me to recognize what has attracted me to a view. Sometimes the curves are assembled into a lacy or fractal edge. At other times they stand boldly alone. I edit the landscapes I paint by simplifying them, adjusting color and value to emphasis the power of these curves and lay them out for your eye to slide along, rapidly or slowly, with reasons to return to the scene again and again.

These curves will trigger memories in you, the viewer and bring remembrance of your rich life experience to add to the experience of viewing this work. It is with that melding of viewer and object that the final art is created. It is unique for every viewer and for every time it is viewed as we can never step into the same river twice.
